2021 SPRING EVENTS: A LOOKBACK
This Spring we’ve been busy at The Rising Majority. In the face of anti-Asian hate and international state violence from Columbia to Palestine to Ohio, we have continued to ask ourselves what does it mean to be in authentic mutli-racial solidarity? What does it mean beyond a statement, beyond a moment, beyond a news cycle? This Spring we have experimented with what this type of solidarity can look like. We’ve held film screenings, panel discussions, and arts and healing classes. We have challenged ourselves to lean into community and to trust that we have everything we need to survive.
Rising Majority Coalition Statement in Response to the White Supremacist violence in Georgia on our Asian Communities
(Atlanta, GA)- On March 16th, 2021, eight beloved community members were killed by a white supremacist at three different spas in Cherokee County, GA. More than half of the victims of this hate crime were Asian and most were women.
Position on failed white supremacist coup
On January 6th 2021, white supremacists and pro-Trump supporters, emboldended by Trump’s call to “stand back and stand by”, attempted a coup to steal a legal election outcome.
This morning, the Supreme Court blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to end the DACA program. In the 5-4 opinion, Chief Justice John Roberts called Donald Trump’s administration’s action “arbitrary and capricious.”
The Rising Majority is a Black and people of color led coalition committed to opposing the ravages of racial capitalism, settler colonialism, white supremacy and patriarchy. As Dr. King proclaimed so many years ago, “We need a radical revolution of values” in this country. Nothing could illustrate this point more clearly than the dual crises we face right now: the Coronavirus pandemic and its disproportionate impact on communities of color, as well as the continuing police, vigilante and state violence targeting Black and Brown communities.
